DTC375 - Journal Entry Week 6

What Subculture am I'm a part of?

The subculture I am a part of is a TCG community, namely the one revolving around the Japanese card game "Cardfight Vanguard". In this community people talk about, discuss and play this card game published and developed by Bushiroad. If you play the card game, you'll be part of this wider community that all engage in this subculture.

Some of the shared practices and knowledge within the community are in regards to playing the game and helping others understand the game better - some people write guides on how to play the game, create videos on certain necessary tutorials, and share game knowledge with each other regarding certain cards of aspects of the game.

I first started playing the game back in 2012, roughly 11 years ago when the game was decently new (It was published in 2011). Although I wouldn't say I really "engaged" with much of the subculture besides playing with some of my close friends. Later on when I got more online and used social media, I started talking to and joining more groups that share my interest in the game, and participated in in person events.

The game itself has favored heavily from technology evolving, as it helped the company spread the game more though social media, and helped people from different parts of the world connect to each other regarding the game. However, that also bought up the issue of the more "toxic" members of the community that consists of people being very negatives about the game - criticism is fine but some people take it too far.

Some of the benefits of being an "insider" is that you'll be able to easily get updates on the game as  they happen - new cards being revealed are spread amongst the various social media groups quickly, and you'll be able to engage in discussions regarding the competitive environment a lot easier as people post and talk about tournament results.

Lastly, to go over how this will evolve in the future, I believe (and hope) the game will continue to grow as it starts to attract more players. It may be hard as it doesn't have a big IP backing it up like the Pokémon TCG, but with more beginner friendly introductory products and people showing interest on social media, I can see the game having a slower, but steady growth.

Bonus: Here's one of my favorite art designs from this game
